RIP Kobe Bryant

Please, #justsayitaintso. After receiving an alert on my computer on Sunday, I knew that my day would never be the same. Kobe Bryant had died in a helicopter crash! I was numb. How could such a talented, inspirational legend be taken away from us so abruptly?

I continued on with my day with the little energy that I had left. Just when you think that the news could not have gotten any worse, I would later learn that Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was also a victim of that crash. Say what now? Imagine losing a husband and child in the same day. I can’t even conceive what Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, must be going through right now.

I salute everyone on social media, on television, wherever, who took a moment to lift her up in their prayers. This very sad news forced me to introspect, and really assess this thing called “life.” It’s a gift, it’s precious, it’s golden, and it is fragile. We do not know what tomorrow may bring, so we have to live every moment to the fullest. These moments are always reminders of the importance of embracing your loved ones, showing them that they’re valued, and showing them that you care, because you don’t truly know what tomorrow holds.

Bryant’s affection for his family was evident, and he was clearly an inspiration and a cheerleader of Gianna, a once budding basketball star. In fact, they were en route to Gianna’s basketball game when the accident occurred. Sadly, we will not get to see Kobe’s legacy through her, but there’s no doubt that like her dad, Gianna was destined for greatness. And while Kobe did not have a son, Gianna held her own on the court, informing others that she “got this.”

Amidst the sorrow and the pain, I can say that I feel blessed to have grown up in the same time as this legend, to see him shine on the court, and to see him play the game of basketball like it was a manifestation of his true purpose.

We miss you, and we LOVE you. May your soul RIP!
