Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. day, in remembrance of one of the greatest leaders and civil rights activist that ever lived, it is only fitting that I take a moment to reflect on his monumental work–his unwavering fight for equity, his fight for freedom, and his fight for humanity. Here’s to the great MLK…
Back in 1963, at the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, MLK decided that he would not rest, and that he would not stop. He would fight relentlessly until every Black man was free. Even though slavery was abolished a century earlier, there were still segregation laws that essentially deprived the Black man of access, opportunities, and just the right to live like a full man. That is, the right to be a human.
But, MLK had a dream! He had a dream that his quest for equality and humanity would be realized one day. He dreamt because he knew that it all starts with a DREAM. Here at CreativeAjay, we believe that DREAMS are in fact powerful. They’re the start of something big, something grand, and something powerful.
There are powers in dreams. When you dream, people are often caught off guard, and the truth is, they really don’t know how to react. They don’t know that it is okay to support a person’s DREAM and encourage them along the way. Their easiest reaction is usually to cast doubt, to expel negative energy, and let’s just face it, to spew sheer hate. If this is the reaction that you get to your DREAMS, I implore you to continue dreaming and to dream even bigger. Trust me, they see you; they’re out there watching, and when those dreams are made a reality, that’s affirmation of the importance of having seized the opportunity to dream.
When MLK dreamt, not everyone was on team MLK. To this day, many would still opt for a pre-Civil Rights America. But, as we say around here, standing in your truth means sometimes that you’ll stand alone. You won’t always have the masses on your side. But you can never stop dreaming!
Below I’ll share an excerpt from MLK’s speech. There’s just so much depth and substance to ruminate on. He was indeed a great man!
“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.
This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.
With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.”
What are you dreaming of?
In honor of the great MLK.
