Are You Flashing a Winning Smile?
By Alecia James
Hair is gorgeous, face is flawless and the garb you're donning is as eye-catching as the latest tech gadget, effortlessly elevating you to "center of attention" status.
But do you have a winning smile to match? Among the many signs displayed inside my orthodontist's office is one that reads: "Ignore your teeth and they'll go away." Proper dental care is not to be taken lightly.
As kids we dreaded the dentist, the fear of someone aggressively wielding mechanical objects in your mouth. That ain't fun. It sure is nothing like a trip to Toys R Us or Dave & Buster's where given the atmosphere, you're transformed into your own make-believe world of endless fun.
As adults, this aversion hasn't changed much. Now the battle is against even greater demons. Think root canals: ouch! Many of these dental woes could have easily been avoided with effectual oral practices in the first place. In fact, the last dentist I visited (obviously inexperienced), drilled my tooth like he was an angry construction worker laboriously working on the second avenue subway line.
In addition to a consistent dental care routine, what we eat also heavily influences the health and appearance of our teeth. For those with that special "sweet tooth" who get excited with even the slightest mention of sugary foods, you might want to reconsider this addiction, given that when bacteria feed on sugars in the mouth, acids are produced. The enamel (outer layer of the tooth) is susceptible to acids which promotes the formation of cavities and causes tooth decay. Cut out some of those sweets for the sake of your teeth. They will thank you.
So what do you do to combat this? You brush right? Great! We're on the same track here. Brushing helps to remove particles, plaque and some surface stains from the tooth. And here are some tips regarding brushing.
