Meet Angeline Temple, Culinary Extraordinaire and CEO of Ange'luscious Authentic Dishes.
As told to Alecia James, Thursday, March 5, 2015
The tropical island of Jamaica is full of flavor, spice, and zest. It boasts some of the tastiest and most mouth-watering cuisine your taste buds will ever experience. Angeline Temple is a daughter of Jamaica who has skillfully infused some of these rich flavors and savory dishes into what I call her ultimate and heavenly culinary explorations. She's also the mastermind and gifted hands behind Ange'luscious Authentic Dishes. You see, we here at Creative Ajay are fascinated with all kinds of creativity, and we're not ashamed of our healthy obsession with creative dishes. So, when I discovered this culinary extraordinaire, I was immediately catapulted to an exotic land brimming with flavors and zest.
The way our talented sister has taken her culinary explorations and curiosities to an extraordinary level has left many in total awe. Her enthusiasm and pluck are infectious and you're left with a burning desire to experiment more, and take your own culinary journey to new heights. Don't take my word for it—they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and the artistry and finesse displayed in her photos will leave you astounded through her sheer ability to concoct magical creations from simple natural ingredients.
There are many teachable moments here. Angeline educates us on the value of eating clean, while omitting artificial ingredients. Amazingly, she's able to do this without sacrificing flavors. As an avid food enthusiast who "eats, sleeps, and breathes food," she made the crucial decision to become the "CEO" of her own health. Through her own trials and research, she has replaced her need and dependence on prescription drugs with the healing powers of natural foods. She believes that education is a key aspect that will help to raise awareness to ensure a healthier lifestyle for all, and shares that her testimony has already inspired a healthier change in many.
Her sense of realness is captivating and has definitely made her more relatable in the eyes and hearts of her fans. On her blog, she speaks candidly about her family which provides tremendous support, and is an active part of her culinary journey.
It's time for you to meet this fascinating spirit. Get ready to be whisked away to a land of culinary splendor where the shrimp is succulent and the flavors engage in a merry dance.
CAJ- In your autobiography, you describe yourself as someone who was “born to cook.” At Creative Ajay, we believe that everyone should fully embrace and explore their passions. How has discovering your true passion changed your life?
If I’m not in the kitchen aka my "sanctuary" or engaged in some type of culinary activity, I feel a sense of emptiness. Discovering my passion has brought much awareness and enlightenment to my life. For years, whenever invited, I’d inadvertently take over my friends' and relatives' kitchens, oblivious to the fact that it was indeed a passion. Now my culinary journey/passion has transformed into pure bliss. It brings me JOY!
Your dishes are Caribbean inspired, infused with your own flavors, twists and personal concoctions. Is there a unique essence that defines your dishes, or is it more of a case where each dish unveils completely new expectations?
Love is the unique essence that defines my dishes. Emotions play an integral part in my cuisine. If my vibrations aren’t as high as it should be, I avoid cooking. If I can’t put my heart in it, then I won’t do it. Why? There is an absence of love.
Perusing your online posts, I notice that they are heavily family focused, highlighting a special adoration for your grandmother who inspired your love and passion for cooking. You also speak fondly of your intriguing sons who are living and sharing this remarkable journey with you as well.
How important is this sense of “family” to your current success as a culinary extraordinaire?
My immediate family means EVERYTHING to me. My children and grandma support me wholeheartedly. Robert, my eldest son designed my website and my logo/watermark. Matter of fact, it was his idea to create my Facebook fan page and write a cookbook. D’Angelo my youngest has more of a passion for devouring my culinary creations, inviting all his friends over for dinner and soliciting my services, which by the way he does extremely well. My grandma is always there to provide her input whenever I need coaching on recipes that are practically non-existent nowadays (like shad and banana), but was the rave back in her days. Each one teaches one. It’s extremely important that we educate and learn from each other.
I’m not sure I've seen dishes anywhere as visually appealing and enticing as yours. At what point did food transcend from being just “plain food,” to the artistic level that you have taken it?
Hun, I swear I wow myself sometimes. Ok let me try to explain this as best as I possibly can. It’s sort of an evolution…. over time. It’s like being in a beginner’s class then moving on to more advanced classes. The stunner is, I had absolutely no idea that I was even in class. I was in total oblivion. When you love what you do, and become so engulfed into your passion, it’s as if you’re in a whole new world/your own world. I WAS BORN TO COOK. God created me this way. This passion stems from core of my soul.
It’s my audience that actually brought to my attention the intrinsic details of my culinary cuisine/creations. In my head, I was simply doing what should be done. In my head, all moms cook like this…or at least make an attempt to nourish their families. Yes hun, I lived in a bubble. Now I’m aware that I’m "different" in the kitchen also.
All my life I was told that I was different (not in a bad way though). I describe myself as multifaceted and unique. I’m blessed with multiple gifts. Cooking is just one of them. Each day, my taste buds evolve. I embrace all kinds of foods. Repetition equates to boredom. Food shouldn’t be boring. The only gross foods are processed foods. I embrace all cultures and their culinary cuisine/techniques. My openness and willingness to explore different cuisines may also be a contributor to the "artistic level" that you refer to. I have so much more to learn; I love what I do, however (in my head) I’m still not at my absolute best. I’m always striving for more…for better or best. God isn’t done with me yet. Thank you for recognizing my excellence.
Do you normally plan your recipes in advance, or is it through your creative process of cooking and experimenting that a unique dish is formulated?
I go to bed dreaming of recipes. I really do dream of food. Most of my meals are planned in advance, but for some strange reason, once I get into my sanctuary, my "creative juices" begin to flow and new dish is often created.
In a world laden with processed foods, I love that you encourage cooking from scratch and utilizing natural ingredients. More importantly, you are able to omit artificial ingredients without sacrificing flavors.
- Can you explain why this is important to you as a cancer survivor?
Real food, from the earth, is necessary to achieve optimal health. As a cancer survivor, it is extremely important that I educate and bring awareness to those who are receptive to this wealth of information.
For years I have been brainwashed with subliminal messages from the media. I was misled. For many years, I was an advocate for prescribed and over the counter medication. My home medicine cabinet was identical to that of a pharmacy. I was brainwashed into believing that pills cured most, if not all medical conditions and surgery was the only option for high risk issues … otherwise you would have to deal with the inevitable.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, none of the specialists offered any literature about healing the body with a plant based diet or suggested a change in my lifestyle. My only options were radiation or bilateral mastectomy. Back then, I was clueless about the benefits of raw foods and chose surgery simply because I couldn’t afford to be "sick" from the radiation. I have heard of cancer, but wasn’t completely AWARE. To my knowledge, no one in my family had cancer. I didn’t know anyone who suffered from cancer. However, I do recall hearing the words, "sick and vomiting and losing weight" whenever the words chemotherapy, radiation or cancer were mentioned.
I "run" my house, so I couldn’t afford to be sick. I recall sharing my diagnosis with a few friends and the feedback wasn’t at all comforting. They all knew someone who passed away from cancer via chemotherapy. I thank the Lord for giving me a new look on life.
It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with endometriosis (which had me bedridden for seven days each month) and underwent another surgical procedure, which by the way was unsuccessful, that I begun delving into my own research. The doctor had no clue why the endometriosis returned. All he wanted to do was medicate me with prescription drugs that, amongst other side effects, did nothing but put me to sleep. Good God, can I please stay awake! I could sense his irritability, because I was beginning to ask a lot of questions and refusing his medications, which wreaked havoc on my body. His only "fix" for the endometriosis was another surgical procedure: Hysterectomy. Really?? I’ve already had bilateral mastectomy and now you wanna remove my uterus?? Really??
To make a long story short, I took matters into my own hands and conducted my own research. No longer do I feel the need for prescription or over the counter drugs and my body is healing itself. I’m not anti-drugs. I just don’t believe that anyone should have to be dependent on any kind of drugs for the rest of their life. I believe drugs should only be used (if at all) in an emergency. I’m still a work in progress. I’m now aware that most of the foods we consume are toxic to our bodies. The preservatives in packaged foods on the supermarket shelves are not to extend our lives, but rather to extend the "shelf life."
Raw Foods work. Cooking from scratch works. I’m not vegan or vegetarian, however I’ve made lifestyle changes which works for me. If my food isn’t raw, I make it a habit to READ the ingredients on the label. If I’m unable to pronounce an ingredient, chances are, it’s a chemical that my body is unable to process. Our bodies aren’t designed to process artificial ingredients.
My lifestyle/dietary changes include, but is not limited to an abundance of fruits, vegetables, and herbs; heart healthy oils and nut milks. I avoid soy; I’ve limited the use of processed foods as much as I possibly can. My "farm’acy" is now foods from the earth. Disciplined I am, and disciplined I would love every one else to be.
You’re the ultimate food lover and enthusiast who describe “God’s Garden of Eden” as your medicine. For those who are still on the fence about the healing powers of natural foods, how can we help to raise awareness to ensure a healthier lifestyle for all?
Genesis 1:29, "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of the earth and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."
In order to raise awareness, it is necessary for us to be educated. Knowledge is becoming aware. My testimony has inspired many individuals to embrace natural, whole foods and a healthier lifestyle. If I’m able educate or inspire just one person, the world will eventually become aware.
I love your sense of “realness” and true grit. In addition to offering some of the most authentic and creative dishes on the web, I always look forward to the serving of “realness” that I get when reading your posts. Without any “sugar coating” or extraneous embellishments, you are able to offer a candid, unobstructed view into your everyday life.
- Does offering this insight connect you closer to your fans?
My fans are my extended family. I receive numerous phone calls and accolades from people all over the world that I’ve never even met; simply because they wanted to say hello, or to thank me for being such an inspiration. I’ve encountered many wonderful people who have expressed their desire to meet and greet. I’ve actually had the honor of meeting a few of them in person, whenever they visited my side of the world.
Some prefer to remain private and inbox me with questions whenever I post or discuss a relatable topic. Some of my friends think I’m bold for mentioning certain things. I consider myself to be free-spirited. I’ve created awesome friendships though social media.
It brings me much joy whenever my fans recreate my dishes and upload their photos on Facebook and other social platforms; or make videos about Ange’luscious. That is confirmation that people are inspired and my efforts to educate are not at all in vain. As long as I’m able to help someone who may be struggling with similar issues, I will continue to be open and have fun interacting with my fans.
A new word has been added to my lexicon: “d’luscious,” frequently used to describe your authentic dishes. Can you tell everyone how you coined this term and the meaning behind it?
Delicious is an adjective used to describe any cuisine that tantalizes the palate. For years, long before I had recognized that I was a foodie, I was told that I described food as if it were sex.
I’m passionate. I’m sexual. I’m sexy. I’m luscious. I’m the daughter of Precious. Everything I do is sexy and luscious. I walk luscious. I talk luscious. Like myself, my food is sexy and visually appealing. It’s a reflection of ME; and every part of my being, engulfed in love. My food commands attention and releases vibrations that will cause one to salivate, yearn and lust. It’s derived from the word and powers of Ange’ LUSCIOUS. It would be an understatement for me to describe my food as plain ole delicious. My cuisine is D’LUSCIOUS. I’m feeling myself right now and I’m falling into another realm. Can you feel it? Affirmations are powerful.
You recently published a gift for your fans, “From My Taste Buds To Yours,” a recipe collection of some of your mouth-watering, scrumptious dishes, and a celebration of all things d’luscious. This is awesome! What can we expect in this publication and how can we purchase your book?
I love your enthusiasm. Over the years, I’ve created a multitude of recipes and wanted to publish every last one of them. People were practically begging for my recipes. It was a tough decision, however I managed to compile some of the most requested and anticipated recipes and birthed my cookbook “From My Taste Buds To Yours.”
It’s 131 pages of visually appealing, colorful, high definition photographs, which bring the food to life. It includes step by step instructions, which makes it so much easier to understand the recipes and creates a rather memorable cooking experience. I urge everyone to embrace their kitchen and develop their palates while learning how to cook from scratch without utilizing artificial ingredients.

I’m fascinated with creative cooking, and I can say that simply studying your dishes has inspired me to explore and experiment more in my kitchen. Did you know that your passion would inspire so many people?
I appreciate your keen interest in my dishes. I had no idea that I would inspire so many people. When my son Robert instructed me (not suggested) to create a fan page on Facebook, and I do expand on that topic in my cookbook, I had no idea that there were so many people who shared the same passion. I’m an avid researcher, who is hungry for knowledge in all aspects of life and soon realized that I was sharing the knowledge that I had attained.
My fans are always interactive. My personal style piques their interest. Some develop a fascination whenever I recreated customary dishes or interchanged ingredients. I’m so out of the box and I love being unique. I enjoy doing things differently. I’ve inspired others to think outside of the box, introduced and educated many on earth foods and their benefits. People love it! Like myself, so many people have become AWARE.

Anything else you’d like to share with us? What can we expect from you in the New Year?
Absolutely! This New Year will definitely be as fulfilling, if not more blessed than previous years. I remain blessed. Some of the projects I’m currently working on include: my line of sauces and spice blends; customized meal plans; and my very own restaurant. Stay tuned.
Thank you so much for this awesome opportunity. It’s been a pleasure. I am honored.
This was quite a mouthful...... (pun intended). How will I be able to control the curiosity of my taste buds after this? But what I do know for sure is that I am truly inspired.
What is separating you from your passions? It's clear that nothing comes between Angie and her dishes. Her unmatched enthusiasm about her creations has created a passion that drives her to set the bar even higher, propelling her to the top of her game. She's quite modest though, admitting that she's not at her absolute best and is always striving for more. "God isn’t done with me yet" she says.
My guests have inspired me soooo much. They have so much talent, so much zeal and so much drive. Once again, I implore you to pursue your passion to the fullest, whatever it is. You have no idea who you might impact along the way. Thank you Angeline for sharing this journey with us!
There's something powerful happening here. Her enchantment with food defines a strong affinity. "As long as my sense of taste remains intact, our love affair will never end." - Angeline Temple
And she's BOLD, ALLURING and DIFFERENT!
