Creative Ajay is turning 2! Where did time go? In celebration of our second anniversary, I've decided to hone my inner Queen on a mental and spiritual journey back to my roots. The Jamaican motto is "Out of Many, One People," and like any curious person, I've frequently questioned my cultural and ancestral identity. Being endowed with very bold features, it wasn't hard for me to figure out what I really was.
Our tagline here clearly encourages the idea of being Bold, Alluring and Different. Why try to blend in when you can stand out, autonomously expressing yourself in a sea of look-alikes? As a Black woman, I've been fed conflicting messages as to what beauty is, and what it should look like. I've also experimented along the way. But, if you aren't true to yourself, then you're living nothing but a lie. I've challenged the status quo, eschewing what is viewed as being popular, and embracing the essence of my own imaginative creations.
I love keeping it REAL and RAW. So, this shoot also gives you a sneak peek inside my home where I was photographed. And it was FUN. If this element is missing, I'd rather not do it. I've decided to infuse my passion for art, with makeup, and do an African-inspired shoot. The African head-wrap briefly described in this post, is a traditional accessory in many African tribes, still worn today. It is generally worn to complement a woman's attire, as well as at ceremonial occasions and special events. In its own right, an accessory easily conveying "Queen" status on its wearer.
The feedback I received from my friends and others on social media was nothing short of phenomenal. The whole experience really solidified my stance on the importance of not allowing any force or entity to set parameters for you. In other words, we've demolished the darn "box" once and for all! It's no denying that stepping in the #queendom realm was an incredible experience.
Here are some of my favorite moments from the shoot.
Makeup: Red lipstick, purple and bronze eyeshadow.
Jewelry: Gold fashion necklace and earrings.
Outfit: Black v-neck top.
Turbans: A pink kente head wrap, as well as a yellow multi-colored number. The yellow head wrap was styled two ways, as a turban and as a simple headband.
A special shout out to @evasheadwraps, a fellow Queen, who has dished out nothing short of love to me. Her work is flawless and she is clearly a creative spirit.
Until next time, BE BOLD. BE ALLURING. BE DIFFERENT!
